Platinum Plating for Jewelry: What it is and How it Works

article.image.alt

It’s important that your personalized Jewelry and Keepsakes look as beautiful as possible for as long as possible. That’s why, at Legacy Touch, we’ve recently started platinum plating all of our Sterling Silver and White Gold products.

What is Platinum Plating?

Platinum plating is the finish of choice for top quality fine Jewelry and Keepsakes. It is highly reflective and has a gorgeous, deep luster. Along with adding extra beauty to the piece, platinum plating acts as a protective coating on Sterling Silver or White Gold Jewelry and Keepsakes.

How Does Platinum Plating Work?

Platinum plating works by helping Sterling Silver or White Gold Jewelry and Keepsakes retain their shine and color over time. Platinum plating works wonders by making these metals stronger and more scratch resistant, as well.

Examples of Platinum Plated Jewelry & Keepsakes

All Sterling Silver or White Gold Fingerprint Jewelry and Keepsakes that we offer are platinum plated by our team of expert artists, technicians, and jewelers in Kansas City, MO. This includes our Fingerprint Pendants, Fingerprint Rings, and even accessories like Symbolic Charms.

Cleaning Your Platinum Plated Jewelry

To clean your platinum plated Jewelry, please follow all instructions provided by the manufacturer.

For Jewelry from Legacy Touch, the instructions are:

Gold or Sterling Silver Lockets and Urn Pendants

Gold Lockets should be wiped clean with a soft cloth. Sterling Silver Lockets and Urn Pendants can be cleaned with a soft cloth or a silver polishing cloth. Be sure to rub gently, following the grain. Lockets and Cremation Urn Pendants carry precious photos and ashes; for this reason, they should not be submerged in water.

Other Sterling Silver Jewelry

Our other Sterling Silver Jewelry pieces can be wiped clean or treated with silver tarnish remover, following instructions. Tarnish remover should be followed with a warm soapy wash. Rinse well, and towel dry.

Other Gold Jewelry

Our other 10k or 14k Gold Jewelry pieces can be cleaned with warm water and mild dish washing soap. Soak your Gold Keepsake for 20-30 minutes in the solution. Gently clean with a soft cloth or a soft-bristled brush. Rinse with lukewarm water to remove any soap residue. Please, no chlorine or other harsh chemicals or abrasives.

Treat your pieces with the respect they deserve, avoiding all chemicals (including chlorine), activities (sports, etc.), and hard surfaces which can be damaging to fine metals. Quality Jewelry should always be shielded from hairspray, bug spray, lotions, and swimming pools. Care for your Keepsakes, and they will return the favor with many years of cherished connection.

What to Do if Platinum Plating Begins to Wear Off

Over time and with use, platinum plating will begin to wear away. You can easily have your Jewelry replated by an experienced jeweler to return the piece to its original shine.

Your Jewelry is a special heirloom that you will cherish for years to come. We hope that it brings you comfort and connection through its enduring beauty. You can learn more about how we make Fingerprint Jewelry by visiting our How it Works page or by contacting us.
